2009 Saturn VUE Hybrid Overview
Saturn's 32 MPG Highway 2009 Vue Two-Mode Hybrid is GM's first front-wheel-drive application of a "full" hybrid system, which is similar to Toyota's "Hybrid Synergy Drive" system. This system first appeared on Chevrolet/GMC pickups and SUVs. Saturn also sells a Vue Hybrid that's a mild hybrid, which GM estimates will be roughly as efficient but not as powerful. It will continue to be sold along with the two-mode hybrid. Four-wheel drive is not offered, and the Vue seats five.
The Vue's main competitors vary; the compact Ford Escape Hybrid is comparable to the mild hybrid in terms of price and size, but the two-mode is comparable to the midsize Toyota Highlander Hybrid in performance and price.
GM's two-mode hybrid drivetrain is typical of most hybrids, employing two electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack. The motors assist the gas engine and recapture energy during braking. That system is connected to a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that's similar to the one found in traditional Vues, with the exception that the two-mode gets direct-injection technology.
With the V-6 engine and hybrid powertrain, this model is intended to increase fuel efficiency without hindering performance capabilities. It goes from zero to 60 in 7.3 seconds, which is the same as the XR model despite the fact that the hybrid weighs about 400 pounds more. Still, GM says the system will achieve 50 percent better fuel economy in mixed driving compared to the XR model. The two-mode hybrid is also rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
