2015 Kia Sorento vs. 2015 Kia Sportage Review

Comparison Review

Introduction
Though both are made by Kia, the Sorento and the Sportage differ in a few key ways. The larger Sorento is better for families that will need to seat more than five passengers with regularity, while the Sportage has an advantage when it comes to price.

Performance/Fuel Economy
The base engine in both is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but most trim levels of the larger Sorento come with a 290-hp, 3.3-liter V-6. The Sportage has its own optional engine, a 260-hp turbo four-cylinder, but we give the edge to the Sportage when it comes to acceleration. Strangely though, the smaller Sportage only has a marginal one mpg edge in fuel economy.

Interior
Like most Kias, the Sportage and the Sorento both offer a lot in the way of standard features. Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, USB ports, and air conditioning are standard on both vehicles. Higher trim levels of both get Kia's UVO infotainment system. There isn't much difference between these two when it comes to interior amenities.

Comfort/Utility
The Kia Sorento has three-row seating, which allows for more utility than the Kia Sportage, since the Sorento can seat up to seven passengers while the Sportage can seat only five. The Sorento is about 10 inches longer than the Sportage to accommodate that extra row, and it still manages to offer slightly more legroom in the rear than the Sportage which taller passengers will appreciate. Rear cargo room is 26.1 cubic feet in the Sportage and only 9.1 cubic feet in the Sorento which doesn't offer much room behind its third-row. Collapse the third-row to get 36.9 cubic feet of cargo space in the Sorento, but you give up the extra two seats. Don't expect to carry seven passengers and a lot of cargo.

Safety
Standard safety features are identical on both vehicles and both earned a full five-star overall crash test rating from the NHTSA, their highest possible score. You can't go wrong with the safety performance of either SUV.

Conclusion
The Kia Sportage and Kia Sorento are very similar when it comes to features, safety, and fuel economy. There are two key differences though: the extra third-row in the Sorento and a $3,000 difference in price. If you don't have to carry more than five passengers on a regular basis, the Sportage is our choice for the savings. But for active families that need a little more room, go for the Sorento.
