2016 Ford Escape vs. 2015 Toyota RAV4 Review

Comparison Review

Introduction
The 2016 Ford Escape and 2015 Toyota RAV4 compete head-to-head in the crowded compact crossover class. Both features similar fuel economy and features, but there are a few differences that could sway consumers one way or the other.

Performance/Fuel Economy
The Escape offers three engines, starting with a 168-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Also available are a 173-hp, turbocharged1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 240-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. The Toyota RAV4 offers just one engine: A 176-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Both offer front- or all-wheel drive. While the Escape and RAV4 have similar fuel-economy numbers, the Escape has a slightly better maximum highway fuel economy rating.

Interior
Both of these compact crossovers are available with navigation, satellite radio, a USB port, an auxiliary jack, Bluetooth, and an infotainment system. The Escape does offer more technology features that aren't found on the RAV4, like an available parallel-parking assist features and a hands-free liftgate. It also features SYNC3, Ford's latest infotainment system which has been revamped for 2016.

Comfort/Utility
The Escape offers more headroom and legroom than the RAV4 up front, and more rear headroom. However, the RAV4 has more cargo volume both with the rears seats up or folded. This makes the Escape the better choice for passenger space and the RAV4 the preferred vehicle for cargo hauling.

Safety
The RAV4 got better crash test ratings, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA compared to four-stars for the Escape. Both offer similar safety feature sets, but the RAV4 has two extra airbags. Each is available with additional safety technology, including forward sensing systems and blind spot warnings with rear cross-traffic alerts.

Conclusion
The Escape offers more powertrain variety, along with a slight edge in fuel economy, and slightly more passenger space. The RAV4 earns points for having better safety ratings and a two-year maintenance program out of the box. But if you're looking for technology and performance, the Escape is the way to go.
