2012 RAM 2500 Overview
Dodge broke off its trucks/commercial vehicles into their own brand for 2012, simply known as RAM. The truck formerly known as the Dodge Ram 2500 now goes by a simplified moniker: 2012 RAM 2500.
Sure, it might have a new name, but most importantly the RAM 2500 keeps the same durability and capability it's always been known for. RAM produces two heavy-duty pickups: the 2500 that we’re examining now and the larger 3500.
The 2012 RAM 2500 is extremely versatile with three cab configurations (regular, crew, and mega), two- or four-wheel drive, and a pair of powerful engines. RAM 2500s equipped with the regular cab come with the 8-foot cargo box, mega cab models come with the 6-foot-4-inch box, and crew cab models can be equipped with either one.
Under the hood of the RAM 2500, a 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 that also outputs 400 pounds-feet of torque comes standard. The second engine option is a 350-hp, 6.7-liter inline-six cylinder turbo-diesel that outputs a whopping 650 pounds-feet of torque with the six-speed manual transmission, a number that jumps up to 800 pounds-feet if you opt for the optional six-speed automatic (the automatic is standard with the gas engine). No matter which option you choose, the RAM 2500 has plenty of power to tackle whatever you throw at it. Towing capacity reaches all the way up to just over 15,000 pounds.
Inside, the RAM 2500 has an interior similar to the RAM 1500 which is a good thing – there are plenty of high quality materials to be found and Chrysler has worked hard over the past several years to update the interior designs and ergonomics found across all their brands. Standard features include air conditioning, automatic headlights, power windows/locks (Crew Cab), and an auxiliary audio input jack. Though the RAM 2500 is a workhorse from the outside, the inside can also be filled with plenty of creature comforts and technology including the new UConnect multimedia system with Bluetooth, heated/ventilated seats, sun roof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power adjustable pedals.
When it comes to safety, the RAM 2500 doesn’t skimp. Multi-stage front and side curtain airbags deploy to keep occupants safe during a collision, while electronic stability control, four-wheel disc antilock brakes, and trailer brake control work to keep you out of harm’s way. A rear park assist system and back-up camera are available for safe reversing. Each RAM 2500 also comes with a full size spare, so you don’t get sidetracked by a flat.
So if you need to get work done, the name might have changed but the tune is thankfully the same in the 2012 RAM 2500.
