2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Overview

New/Notable:
  • Updated exterior styling and interior fabric
  • New 6.1-inch touchscreen available
  • 4- out of 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the NHTSA
The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a compact SUV that seats 5 passengers. It has been given a front-end facelift and an updated interior.

Four trims are available: the ES, SE, SEL, and GT.

The Outlander Sport features a new, bold front-end that was designed after Mitsubishi’s “Dynamic Shield” concept. Its blacked-out headlights, bumper, grille, and air dam create a singular, visually unifying shape that is highlighted by chrome accents. All trims come with standard two-tone, 18-inch wheels and LED tail lights. Fog lights, power/heated side mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, a rear spoiler, and a panoramic moonroof are also available.

Powering the Outlander Sport ES is a standard 148-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. A 168-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also available for the ES trim, but it is standard for the higher trim models. Fuel economy for the ES 2.0-liter is an EPA-estimated 24/31 mpg city/highway. For the ES 2.4-liter and higher trims, it dips slightly to a 23/28 mpg rating.

Inside, the Outlander Sport has a new leather-wrapped, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and new fabric seating. Other standard features include remote keyless entry, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and automatic temperature control. Ambient lighting and an automatic dimming rearview mirror are also available. The multimedia system features a color display, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB Port. Upgrades for the multimedia system include a new 6.1-inch touchscreen, a DVD player, an integrated navigation system with voice recognition, and a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system.

The Outlander Sport earned a 4- out of 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the NHTSA. An advance 7 airbag system, antilock brakes, electronic stability system, hill start assist, and a tire-pressure monitoring system come standard. Optional features include a backup camera and rain-sensing wipers.
