Entering its 10th iteration, the brand-new 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, or the “Evo X” as the enthusiasts like to call it, is more sophisticated and mature than the previous model, while still retaining the legendary performance that has made the model a much-lauded worldwide performance legend.
The Lancer Evolution is available in two trim levels – the razor-sharp GSR and the rally-ready MR. The Evo keeps the 2.0 liter turbocharged and intercooled inline 4-cylinder engine from the previous generation, now producing a lofty 291 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque for seriously rapid acceleration. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission for crisp shifting or a new 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission that offers rapid-fire shifts and three driving modes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The new Super-All Wheel control dynamic handling system is a first in the U.S., offering an extraordinary level of control and traction at each wheel, going beyond traditional all-wheel drive systems.
Two types of 18” aluminum alloy wheels are available – Enkei cast aluminum rims on the GSR and BBS® forged aluminum rims on the MR, with both models sporting sticky performance tires. A 4-sensor, 4-channel Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, two-piece brake rotors, and 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes offers incredible stopping power with minimal fade after repeated hard braking, on the street or the track. MR models offer an even more impressive handling limit, with Eibach springs and Bilstein shock absorbers keep the vehicle firmly planted while handling road imperfections with ease. Dynamic handling technologies include an Active Center Differential, Active Yaw Control, and Active Stability Control. Working in conjunction with the All-Wheel Drive system, it means this is the most advanced version of the Lancer Evolution yet – a vehicle that is truly ready for the rally circuit.
Xenon High-Intensity Discharge headlamps are available, offering superior illumination and visibility over standard halogen lamps. The shark-nosed front end, with an aggressively sloped hood, an integral air scoop, and engine heat outlets, offers a serious statement about the Lancer Evolution’s performance credentials. Inside, an available high-powered Rockford Fosgate® 650-watt Premium Sound System with 10-inch subwoofer, a 6-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3 capability, and SIRIUS® Satellite Radio offers excellent sound quality, while the optional Navigation System will guide you to your destination with confidence.
Arriving at the exact same time as its arch nemesis, the all-new Subaru WRX STI, the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is primed to do battle with more firepower and handling dynamics than ever before.
