2013 MINI MINI-Hardtop Overview

The 2013 MINI Hardtop is still one of the most recognizable cars on the road with its quirky, unique styling. But there’s more than meets the eye with the Hardtop, which also offers superb fuel economy and a surprisingly engaged driving experience.

MINI reshuffled the way it names its cars for 2013, so to clarify, MINI Hardtop now refers to the Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works versions of the four-seat, two-door Cooper. Although the name has changed, there aren’t many changes for the 2013 model year. Bluetooth connectivity is now standard, but satellite radio becomes optional.

From the outside, the Hardtop is distinctly MINI with its round headlamps, and small stature. MINI’s cars have been known for their many customization options and the Hardtop is no exception offering 14 different exterior colors, your choice of a white, black, or body colored roof/mirrors, and several styles and colors of racing stripes. Hardtop Cooper S models come with a functional hood scoop intake, and a dual-panel panoramic power sunroof is optional.

Each of the Hardtop’s three trims gets its own engine. The Cooper Hardtop comes with the base engine, a 121-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The Cooper S Hardtop and the high-performance John Cooper Works Hardtop both feature turbocharged versions of this engine, 181-horsepower in the Cooper S versus 208-horsepower for the John Cooper Works version. Each model comes with a six-speed manual transmission standard, while a six-speed automatic is optional for the Cooper and Cooper S.

Fuel economy is one of the big selling points of the Hardtop. Cooper models return 29 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway with the manual transmission (28/36 with the automatic). Cooper S models check in at 27/35 mpg with the manual (26/34 with the automatic), while John Cooper Works models get 25/33 mpg.

Inside, the Hardtop features seating for four passengers (2+2) and much like the exterior, is offered with plenty of color options for the interior trim pieces and seating. The center console is dominated by the signature MINI speedometer, which is roughly the size of a dinner plate. There are plenty of standard interior features, including power windows and locks, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, and a USB/iPod port. Optional are automatic air conditioning, a navigation system, and heated front seats.

The Hardtop also offers plenty of standard safety features including six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system.

For a car that is all at once stylish, fun to drive, and gives great fuel economy, the 2013 MINI Hardtop is the total package.
