2013 MINI MINI-Convertible Overview

The 2013 MINI Convertible takes the quirky, unique styling and excellent fuel economy of the MINI Hardtop, and adds plenty of top-down fun to the equation.

MINI reshuffled the way it names its cars for 2013, so to clarify, MINI Convertible now refers to the Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works versions of the four-seat, two-door Convertible.  For the 2013 model year, changes include now standard Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio is now optional.

The Convertible features a powered soft-top convertible roof that can open in just 15 seconds and has three settings: closed, partly open to let some rays in, or all the way back for a true top-down experience. Other than that, the Convertible looks identical to the hardtop with the signature round MINI headlamps and a choice of 12 different exterior paint colors. Cooper S and John Cooper Works Convertible models come with a functional hood scoop intake.

Each of the Convertible’s three trims gets its own engine. The Cooper Convertible comes with the base engine, a 121-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The Cooper S Convertible and the high-performance John Cooper Works Convertible both feature turbocharged versions of this engine, 181-horsepower in the Cooper S versus 208-horsepower for the John Cooper Works version. Each model comes with a six-speed manual transmission standard, while a six-speed automatic is optional for the Cooper and Cooper S.

The 2013 MINI Convertible gets slightly lower mileage figures compared to the Hardtop. Cooper models get 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with either transmission. Cooper S models, despite their added power, get the same mileage figures in at 27/35 mpg with the manual transmission (26/34 with the automatic), while John Cooper Works models get 25/33 mpg.

Inside, the Convertible seats up to four passengers in a 2+2 configuration. The interior, much like the exterior, is offered with plenty of color options for the trim pieces and seating. MINI’s signature interior piece, the dinner plate size speedometer, dominates the center console and is the focal point of the whole car. There are plenty of standard interior features, including power windows and locks, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, and a USB/iPod port. Optional are automatic air conditioning, a navigation system, and heated front seats.

The Convertible offers side-impact and front airbags, but no side-curtain airbags. There is a roll bar, which remains low behind the rear headrests until a roll over is detected at which time it raises up to protect occupants. Antilock brakes and an electronic stability system are also standard.
