As the bigger, more spacious version of the hot hatchback Cooper, the brand-new 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman takes all the personality and amazing virtues of the standard Cooper and adds additional cargo space, a stretched wheelbase, a passenger-side backseat half-door, and an old-fashioned tailgate that features two vertical doors for easy access to the generous cargo area. It boasts adorable, radical retro styling and the same fuel-efficient, powerful engine as the Cooper.
The Cooper Clubman is powered by a peppy 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 118 horsepower and an ample amount of torque, mated to a quick-shifting Getrag® 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission with Agitronic steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for quick manual shifting ability. Fuel economy with the manual transmission is an impressive 28/37 city/highway MPG. The standard front-wheel drive layout offers excellent handling and soaks up bumps with ease.
Safety features include 4-wheel, 4-sensor anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake force distribution and Cornering Brake Control which help the mini stop with authority and help to minimize wheel lockup by stabilizing brake pressure. Six standard airbags (on hardtop models) including dual front, dual seat-mounted side, and side curtain airbags to protect front and rear passengers. Optional Dynamic Stability Control helps to enhance vehicle control and driver confidence during evasive maneuvers. Standard All-Season Traction control prevents wheel spin and increases grip on slippery or icy roads. The standard Flat Tire Monitor alerts the driver if any change in tire pressure is detected. Optional Park Distance Control uses ultrasonic waves emitted from sensors in the rear bumper to help you back up without hitting any objects. Optional run-flat tires allow you to drive up to 80 MPH with a loss of pressure. Optional Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlamps with auto-leveling and power washer keep visibility at a maximum.
Outside, the Cooper Clubman is fully customizable with contrasting roof and mirror colors and cool paint colors like “Hot Chocolate”. Inside, the optional Navigation System uses GPS satellite technology to provide real-time traffic information, turn-by-turn directions, and features voice-control functions. An available, huge dual-pane panoramic sunroof offers an invitation to the sun and ocean breezes, if you’re so lucky to be in such a locale. The optional Mini HiFi CD Sound System features 10 speakers, MP3 capability, and an optional high-definition radio for the ultimate sound. With the rear seats folded flat, the Cooper Clubman boasts a major improvement in cargo room – with a maximum of 32.8 cubic feet.
Addressing the only concern about the standard Cooper – cargo space and accessibility – the new 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman is the perfect blend of driving dynamics and spaciousness. Now the only trick is getting your hands on one – first-year availability will be limited.
