The Traverse will quite certainly prove handier than the Mercury Mountaineer for those of you with frequent child-cargo.
Towing is considerably more the Mercury's forte than it is the Chevrolet Traverse's.

The Traverse's tank is almost the same size as the Mercury's, though the Mercury Mountaineer's is a bit larger.

Handling
With its tighter turning circle, the Mercury Mountaineer is most certainly nimbler than the Chevrolet Traverse, something to consider if you do a lot of city driving; however, keep in mind that a vehicle with a tight turning circle may feel a bit twitchy on the highway.
Drivetrain
The Chevrolet Traverse's engine is a tad smaller than the Mountaineer's, but not terribly so.
Torque is the force that lets you accelerate quickly, and in this respect, the Chevrolet Traverse isn't much more powerful than the Mercury.
Comfort
While the front cabin in the Traverse offers a bit more head room than the Mercury Mountaineer, there honestly isn't much of a difference.
