2008 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Overview
A benchmark of versatility and dynamics, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz M-Class offers a winning combination of efficiency, power, cargo flexibility, and an adaptable driving personality. With seating for up to 5 adults, standard 4MATIC™ 4-wheel drive, and powerful gasoline and diesel engine choices, the M-Class is a confident and stunning foray into the luxury SUV fray. The ML320 CDI is the efficiency leader of the group, with a revolutionary 3.0 liter 24-valve V-6 diesel engine producing 215 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque that yields up to 30 percent better fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines, while producing notably less greenhouse gas emissions. The ML350 features an inspired 3.5 liter 24-valve V-6 making 268 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5.5 liter 24-valve V-8 engine powers the ML550, making a robust 382 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. The scorching ML63 AMG is one of the world’s quickest SUVs, thanks to a hand-built 6.3 liter 32-valve V-8 engine cranking out a massive 503 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Engines are mated to a 7-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with Direct Select™ shifter. The ML63 AMG features an AMG SPEEDSHIFT™ 7-speed automatic with driver-adaptive programming. The Off-Road Driving Program allows the driver to engage programming recalibrations of the traction system, ABS, engine management, and automatic transmission to enhance control in off-highway driving. Downhill Speed Regulation automatically modulates throttle, brakes, and ABS to maintain a consistent crawl speed when descending hills. Hill-start assist prevents unwanted vehicle rollback when taking off from a start on uphill or downhill grades by maintaining brake pressure for one second after the brake pedal is released. The Integrated Restraint System incorporates dual-stage front air bags, second- and third-row side impact air bags, and window curtain airbags spanning all three rows. A standard 4-wheel Electronic Traction System monitors the speed of all four wheels to detect wheel slip and adjusts braking power as necessary, while the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) applies brake power and engine power to correct understeer or oversteer during evasive maneuvers. The race-inspired ML63 AMG adds an AMG-calibrated Airmatic sport suspension and spring struts with specially tuned Adaptive Damping System providing stellar handling and braking capabilities. M-Class models feature a maximum 72.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats lowered. With 8- or 10-way power adjustable heated front seats and second-row 60/40 split folding rear seatbacks, the vehicle can be arranged in a variety of configurations to accommodate 5 passengers and an ample amount of cargo. A DVD-based Navigation System with Bluetooth® offers superior maps and total connectivity. Audio choices are strong as well, with a Harman/Kardon LOGIC7® digital surround sound system available. Combining refined, visceral performance, flexible driving dynamics, and a wealth of innovative features, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is comfortable in the urban jungle or a place in the wild. |
