2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Overview
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK is a delightful fusion of sportiness and luxury in a compact roadster. There’s enough performance to excite most road warriors, but also more than enough comfort to keep both passengers happy.
All new for 2012, the third-generation, rear-wheel-drive SLK comes in three models that are differentiated mostly by engine power. The SLK250 sports a 201-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard with a 7-speed automatic as an option.
The SLK350 is powered by a 302-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine and is backed by a 7-speed automatic. The SLK55 AMG is the hottest model with a 415-horsepower 5.5-liter V-8 and automatic transmission. EPA estimated fuel economy for the SLK ranges from 19-23 mpg city and 28-33 mpg highway, depending on the model.
The SLK styling features a long hood and deep front air dam that adds a little authentic “rage” to the machine. The famous retractable hardtop returns and takes just 20 seconds to tuck neatly into trunk. The top can also be ordered with a panorama roof with adjustable transparency.
Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, 8-way power seats, power tilt and telescoping steering column, vinyl upholstery, and 17-inch wheels. The SLK350 upgrades to leather seating and 18-inch wheels. The base 8-speaker audio system includes Bluetooth, HD radio, and USB port.
Mercedes offers a host of special packages to suit personal tastes. The Premium Package adds heated seats and a Harmon Kardon surround-sound audio system with satellite radio, iPod connectivity. Upgrading to the Multimedia Package adds a hard-drive-based navigation, 7-inch display screen, voice activation. Other packages or stand-alone options can add active headlights, wood trim, dual-zone climate control, and premium leather.
The SLK55 AMG boosts performance to the maximum with a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds. A sport-tuned suspension with sophisticated brake controls and precise steering provides a superior open-top driving experience on challenging roads. An optional handling package adds 10-spoke wheels, stiffer suspension tuning, and composite brakes up front.
Standard safety equipment includes integrated rollbars, stability control, traction control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, eight airbags, active headrest, parking assist, and Attention Assist, which helps to detect driver drowsiness.
The SLK is a pleasant surprise in the competitive sports car segment that includes Chevy Corvette, Porsche Cayman, BMW Z4 and Audi TT. It may not carve up a road course as fast as others but it is likely more comfortable to drive.
