The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size luxury SUV with maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. It competes with the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lexus LX570.
Three trim levels are available: the GL350 BlueTEC, GL450 4MATIC, and GL550 4MATIC.
The GL-Class has a muscular, yet sleek design that features a bold front grille and chrome accents. The G550 4MATIC has unique sport body styling with low ground effects and wider, geometric-shaped air vents. Standard features include air suspension, LED daytime running lights, a moonroof, power and heated side mirrors, a power liftgate, a dual-pipe exhaust system, and 19-inch wheels. Adaptive Xenon HID headlights, adaptive suspension, illuminated running boards, skid plates, a trailer hitch receiver, and larger 20- or 21-inch wheels are available as well.
All GL-Class trims have engines mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD). The GL350 BlueTEC has a 240-hp, turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6. The GL450 4MATIC has a 362-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. And the GL550 4MATIC has a 429-hp, twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8. Fuel economy for the GL350 BlueTEC is an EPA-estimated 19/26 mpg city/highway. It drops slightly to 17/21 mpg for the GL450 4MATIC, while the GL550 4MATIC gets a 13/18 mpg rating.
Inside, the GL-Class has a luxurious cabin with numerous amenities for the family. It seats up to seven passengers across three rows. The second and third row seats fold down for a maximum cargo capacity of 93.8 cubic feet. The standard COMAND center console features a 7-inch color display for video playback, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and optional navigation. For 2016, Mercedes-Benz is offering free 5-year service of mbrace Connect, which includes iPhone/Android remote vehicle controls, internet access for information and notifications, local search to places of interest, speed alert, roadside assistance, valet protection, and other features. Other standard features include automatic dimming mirrors, three-zone automatic climate control, power windows/locks, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and a garage-door opener. Leather upholstery, heated/cooled front cup holders, power/heated/ventilated seats, an integrated navigation system a memory seat, adaptive cruise control, an automatic dimming rearview mirror, and a Harmon Kardon premium audio system are also available.
Standard safety features include an airbag system for the front, front-side, knees, and side-curtains, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, forward collision warning, driver drowsiness monitoring, a backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, parking assist, a surround view camera system for parking and slow driving, and autonomous braking are also available.
