2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

  • Large luxury SUV
  • Unique, very rugged styling
  • No major updates for 2015
Though it started life off as an off-road focused SUV, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has moved from its roots to become of the biggest status symbols that you can drive.

With a price that starts north of $100,000, the G-Class delivers a unique proposition for prospective buyers – the capability to go anywhere, and to do it in luxury and style. Taken in from the outside, the G-Class is very distinctive with boxy styling that doesn’t really fit in with the rest of Mercedes’ lineup which seems to opt for smoothness and curved body lines. Another design signature of the G-Class is the stainless-steel cover that sits over the spare-tire at the rear. 18-inch five-spoke wheels are standard, along with LED daytime running lights and bi-xenon headlights.

There are two available G-Class models, the G550 and the G63 AMG. The G550 is powered by a 388-hp, 5.5-liter V-8 that makes 391 pounds-feet of torque. It is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive comes standard. The G63 AMG takes things up more than a few notches as the AMG part of its name would suggest. It features a 544-hp, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 making 560 pounds-feet of torque that has fuel saving start/stop technology.

Inside, the G-Class has a luxurious interior and lots of standard equipment, including leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, Mercedes’ Comand communication system with navigation, power front seats with three-position memory, 7-inch tablet-style LCD screen, 610-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system with HD radio, a heated steering wheel, and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats.

The requisite standard safety features are all there (antilock brakes, electronic stability system with traction control, and six airbags), along with plenty of standard safety technology including a blind spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and a backup camera.
