2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Overview

Vehicle Overview
Mercedes-Benz focuses largely on road-going manners with its M-Class SUV, but the G-Class is a hard-core off-road machine that comfortably seats five people across two rows. It competes with the Land Rover Range Rover. A high-performance AMG variant is also available for 2013.

New for 2013
For 2013, the G-Class gets a new interior with a standard 7-inch display that mimics a tablet device, mounted above the center stack. On the refreshed center console there's a control knob for Mercedes' Comand system, buttons for standard parking assist, a revised shifter assembly and standard mbrace2 in-car communication system. The steering wheel has also been redesigned. On the outside, the G-Class gets new side mirrors and two strip of LED daytime running lights standard.

Exterior
This distinctive SUV's boxy appearance is somewhat softened by body-colored bumpers and rocker panels, plus a stainless-steel spare-tire cover. Exterior features include 18-inch twin five-spoke wheels, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlamps, a spare wheel cover, and body-colored door handles.

Interior
Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, automatic climate control, power windows and locks, Comand communication system with DVD navigation, power front seats with three-position memory and rear parking assistance. Other standard interior features include the mbrace2 7-inch tablet-style LCD screen, 610-watt Harman Kardon premium audio system with HD radio and real-time traffic info, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats.

Under the Hood
Mechanical features include a 5.5-liter V-8 that makes 388 horsepower and 391 pounds-feet of torque, seven-speed automatic transmission, and standard four-wheel drive.

Safety
Standard safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and Distronic Plus brake assist, electronic stability system with traction control, blind spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, rear backup camera, and side curtain airbags.

G63 AMG
A high-performance variant of the G-Class returns for this model year. The 2013 G63 AMG model features a new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 that makes 544 horsepower and 560 pounds-feet of torque. Fuel-saving engine stop/start comes standard as does a twin-lamella front grille, AMG-style shifter and red brake calipers. On the outside, the AMG model gets a bigger front bumper with large air intakes and double louver front grille.
