2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Overview

New/Notable:
  • Redesigned for 2017
  • Available Luxury Package for exterior
  • New standard safety technologies
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a midsize luxury sedan that seats 5 passengers. This year, it has been redesigned and loaded with new safety technologies. It competes with the BMW 5-Series, Cadillac CTS, and Lincoln Continental.

Two trims are available: the E 300 and E 300 4MATIC.

The E-Class continues to be a flagbearer among fine luxury automobiles. It has executive styling that represents refined, subtle elegance. The frontend has a sporty fascia and lean-sculpted hood. A diamond-mesh, dual-bar grille protrudes between the pillow-shaped headlights. Soft, minimal body lines sweep across the sides, while the tailend slopes at an angle. The tail light design has also been simplified. The available Luxury Package includes a unique, sporty frontend, the classic Mercedes front grille, and the stand-up three-pointed star mounted on the hood. Standard features include LED headlights, LED daytime running lamps, and power/heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators. Available features include adaptive suspension, a panoramic moonroof, and a rear spoiler.

Under the hood, the E-Class is powered by a standard 241-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and rear- (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Fuel efficiency for the RWD model is an EPA-estimated 22/30 mpg city/highway. The rating slightly lowers to 22/29 mpg for the AWD model.

The opulent interior of the E-Class is crafted with premium leatherette and wood trim. Premium Nappa leather upholstery, an air purification system, and an air fragrance system are optional cabin upgrades. The center stack features the COMAND multimedia system, which includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, voice recognition control, and dual USB ports. Standard features include power front seats, a memory seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and ambient lighting. Available features include a wood/leather steering wheel, heated/ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging station, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a heads-up display, and a Burmester premium audio system.

Mercedes has made innovative strides in safety by equipping the E-Class with new, standard “PRE-SAFE” and “Car-to-X” communication technologies. Among its many safety capabilities, PRE-SAFE can detect an impending accident and protect the driver’s ears by emitting a safe “pink noise” through the audio speakers. In case of an accident coming from the side, the front-seat bolster can rapidly inflate to minimize injury. The Car-to-X communication system allows the driver to receive in-car updates regarding driving conditions. It also alerts fellow E-Class drivers of accidents and road hazards ahead via the cloud. A backup camera, park assist, a blindspot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure assist, automatic emergency braking, and evasive steering assist are optional.
