Neither the Toyota nor the Mazda MAZDASPEED3 has a marked advantage when it comes to seating capacity.

Performance
With respect to horsepower, the MAZDASPEED3 packs quite a punch and will knock the Toyota Matrix down a few rungs. However, keep in mind that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Dimensions
The Mazda MAZDASPEED3 is tremendously heavier than the Toyota Matrix. Your wallet will hurt more every time you fill up the MAZDASPEED3 than the Matrix because of its bigger tank. The Matrix and the Mazda MAZDASPEED3 compete for the same parking spaces.

Convenience
You'll most certainly take the Toyota Matrix for a fill-up roughly as often as the Mazda MAZDASPEED3.

Cost
With respect to fuel economy, the Toyota Matrix is a bit better than the Mazda MAZDASPEED3, but not by much. The Toyota Matrix won't save you much money at the pump compared to the MAZDASPEED3. The Mazda MAZDASPEED3 is substantially more expensive than the Toyota Matrix when it comes to MSRP.

The Toyota Matrix could learn a lesson or two from the Mazda MAZDASPEED3 when it comes to torque.

Comfort
Taller drivers will substantially enjoy the extra head room in the Toyota Matrix's front cabin compared to the Mazda. While the rear of the Toyota Matrix provides a bit more head- and leg-room than the Mazda MAZDASPEED3, there really isn't much of a difference.
