2015 Mazda Mazda5 Exterior

2015 Mazda Mazda5 Overview

New/Notable:
  • Mazda’s take on the traditional minivan
  • Seats up to six passengers
  • Impressive 28 mpg on the highway
The 2015 Mazda Mazda5 slides into the new model year sans changes, but still offering a fun, more fuel efficient take on the traditional minivan from the Japanese automaker.

Think of the Mazda5 as a sort of “minivan-lite;” instead of seating for seven or eight, there’s seating for six on a platform that is a step down in size and weight from larger vehicles like the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. This allows the Mazda5 to return better fuel economy figures and makes it easier to fit in parking spaces and city environments. Not to mention the fact that it starts around $20,000 giving it a leg up on price as well.

The Mazda5’s shape is all minivan, with a tall cabin that offers plenty of headroom. There are sliding doors on both sides and a rear lifgate; the sides feature a wavy beltline that gives the Mazda5 needed styling. 16-inch alloy wheels are standard, while optional exterior equipment includes a rear spoiler and fog lights.

Power comes from a 157-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 163 pounds-feet of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic; all models are front-wheel drive only. The Mazda5’s fuel economy figures are a large selling point, 22/28 mpg city/highway with the automatic (opting for the manual drops the city number to 21 mpg).

Seating is arranged in a 2+2+2 configuration across the three rows. Automatic climate control, USB port, cruise control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel all come standard. Other available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, and a navigation system.

As federally mandated, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and six airbags come standard, including side curtain airbags that cover all three-rows of seats. A rearview camera and rear proximity sensors are available as well for safer reversing.

EPA Fuel Economy

  • City: 21 MPG
  • Highway: 28 MPG
