The 2009 Mazda5 compact wagon offers copious amounts of cargo/passenger volume, appealing fuel economy and a fresh, sporty exterior.
Available in three trim levels – Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring – the Mazda5 features a standard 2.3-liter, 153-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and somewhat anemic torque figures. For a vehicle of this size, it supplies somewhat sluggish acceleration, but offers good fuel efficiency. Sport models offer a standard five-speed manual transmission, which helps with acceleration and fuel economy, while a five-speed automatic with manual mode is available on all trim levels for smooth gear changes and excellent highway cruising. The Mazda5 receives an attractive 21-22 mpg in the city and 27-28 mpg on the highway and competes with the Honda Fit and Kia Rondo.
The Mazda5 seats six passengers and boasts a generous 44.4 cubic feet of cargo volume with the third-row seats down. Grand Touring models feature available heated front seats with leather trim to coddle driver and passenger in luxury. The optional navigation system provides real-time mapping, directions, and trip information, as well as audio and climate control functions. Standard automatic climate control with second-row air vents and pollen filter create a comfortable, healthy cabin environment. The available Popular Equipment Package includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, rear liftgate spoiler, and side sill extensions for a sportier profile. The available power sliding-glass moonroof with interior sunshade offers sweet sunshine and fresh air into the cabin. The Mazda5 receives a new exterior color: Liquid Silver.
Safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist for enhanced stopping power and minimal wheel lockup. Standard Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering provides varying amounts of steering resistance, depending on speed and road conditions. Advanced dual front airbags, front side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags in all three rows provide excellent passenger protection in a collision. The standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System constantly monitors tire inflation and alerts the driver to any significant drops in tire pressure. Available Xenon High-Intensity Discharge headlamps offer superior illumination and visibility.
As a spacious, fun-to-drive compact wagon, the 2009 Mazda5 offers excellent cargo flexibility, precise handling, and an abundance of features.
