2014 Mazda CX-9 Overview

  • New/Notable:
  • Refreshed in 2013 with new styling and features
  • 273-hp V-6 engine; 24 mpg highway
  • Seats up to seven passengers
Back after a large update last year, the 2014 Mazda CX-9 crossover combines nimble handling with seven-passenger capacity in a stylish package that comes with front- or all-wheel drive.

For 2014, changes are limited. The optional 20-inch wheels have been restyled and a rear cross traffic alert system is available.

The CX-9’s refresh transformed it from a soft looking crossover to something bold and aggressive that matches its handling/driving prowess. Up front is Mazda’s new grille design, flanked by swept back headlight clusters. Handsome 18-inch wheels are standard, while new 20-inch wheels are optional. A convenient power liftgate is also optional.

Under the hood is a powerful 273-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional for those who want extra traction and performance in poor weather and road conditions. Fuel economy numbers are also the same, 17/24 mpg city/highway with FWD, 16/22 mpg city/highway with AWD equipped.

Inside, the midsize CX-9 features seating for up to seven passengers across three rows in a 2-3-2 configuration. The third-row splits 50/50 and the second-row 60/40 to open up more cargo room. With the seats up, the CX-9 has 17.2 cubic feet of cargo storage, which expands to a full 100.7 cubic feet with both rows folded down giving the CX-9 very good cargo capacity.

The CX-9 added extra technology to the cabin in 2013, including a 5.8-inch touchscreen and USB/iPod port which come standard. The touchscreen sits in the middle of the center console and houses controls for the audio and standard dual-zone automatic climate control system. The screen will also display incoming text messages via Bluetooth. Looking for more entertainment? A rear-seat DVD system and a Bose stereo are optional. There are also several comfort options available including powered/heated front seats and leather upholstery.

There are also plenty of safety features to be found on the 2014 CX-9, including all-disc antilock brakes, three-row side curtain airbags, and electronic stability control. A rear cross traffic alert system Rear parking sensors for safe backing are optional, joining a backup camera and blind spot warning as available safety technologies.
