2013 Lexus LS 600h Overview
The hybrid version of Lexus’ range topping LS-series of full-size sedans, the 2013 Lexus LS 600h L might carry the hybrid moniker but it’s geared more towards performance than fuel efficiency.
Just like the gas-only version, the LS 600h L gets a long list of changes for 2013 that includes a brand-new look inside and out. The exterior of the previous model was, to be frank, not exciting in the least, a problem for a car that competes with other flagship luxury sedans like the BMW ActiveHybrid 740 and the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid which ably combine luxury and driving excitement. The LS 600h L always had the luxury aspect down and is now catching up in the other areas.
One look at the 2013 LS 600h L is enough to tell that it’s not the same stodgy car it was in years past. The most striking design feature is the large spindle front grille that’s becoming a Lexus staple and gives the new model an aggressive look from the very front. There are sharp lines and creases adorn the hood, and where gentle curves once were there are now squared off edges. It’s a more focused, hardened look that takes the LS 600h L from anonymous to attractive. 19-inch wheels and LED headlights with automatic high-beams are standard, as are power folding heated side mirrors. There are also blue highlights in the badges and around the headlights which differentiate the hybrid.
The LS 600h L was the first car to combine a V-8 and an electric motor and that setup continues into 2013. Under the hood you’ll find a 389-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 that is paired with an electric motor for a combined total output of 438-horsepower. All-wheel drive and a CVT with power/snow modes are standard. The LS 600h L goes from 0-60 mph in a distinctly un-hybrid-like 5.5 seconds. Fuel economy ratings are 19/23 mpg city/highway, a slight 2-3 mpg combined improvement over the gas-powered models.
The revamped interior is a sight to behold, combining plenty of old world luxury materials like leather and wood with new world technology both on the surface and behind the scenes. The centerpiece of the interior is the new 12.3-inch LCD screen that sits atop the center console and is controlled by a “mouse”-like controller situated in front of the center armrest. This screen is used to display a wide range of information from the Lexus Enform Apps suite, navigation system, or Mark Levinson premium audio system (all standard). Also standard are a power moonroof and four-zone automatic climate control. The LS 600h L only comes with the long-wheelbase with the Executive-Class seating package standard that adds power-adjustable outboard rear seats with massage and heat functions. The right-rear seat even has an ottoman and can perform shiatsu massages. A Bluray rear entertainment system and bamboo trim are optional.
Just like the interior, the LS 600h L comes with pretty much every safety feature imaginable, including 10 standard airbags, electronic stability system, blind spot warning system, backup camera, and an advanced pre-collision system that detects obstacles ahead of the car.
