2008 Lexus IS-F Overview
Muscle Car Meets Performance Imagine the premiere edition of the Lexus IS-F as the sporty IS hot-rodded with a ferocious 416-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 plus the ability to change gears in one-tenth of a second. Add rear-wheel drive, suspension to handle the power, and a few distinguishing chassis tweaks, and you’ve got a sedan with a muscular look and sporty drive. A similar concept is shared by the fastest and finest-handlers in their class – Mercedes’ AMG versions, the Audi S- and RS models, and the BMW M Series. But while the latter two are married to manual transmissions, the Lexus IS-F offers automatic only. Nonetheless, the IS-F offers one of the most technologically advanced transmissions in the industry. From standing start, your IS-F can leap to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds; ultimately reaching 170 mph at top speed. The Lexus IS-F comes loaded with added performance value: a lowered chassis that reduces the car’s center of gravity and give it quicker handling, modified steering and suspension systems for peak cornering ability and 19-inch performance tires. Lexus says the IS-F stops safely and securely thanks to oversized antilock brakes. Revisions to the automaker’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system mean better safety. One example is a limited-slip differential on the rear wheels that helps reduce wheelspin while cornering. Choose the sport mode for a certain steering feel that allows the savvy driver to “drift” through turns. With Lexus’ optional pre-collision system, front seat belts tighten and brakes prime when the vehicle detects an imminent crash. An elongated front bumper, hood, and fenders - coupled with a rear spoiler - give the debuting Lexus a presence that separates it from the rest of the IS pack. The beauty of this 4-seater is further enhanced with a newly designed instrument panel, steering wheel, supportive power seats, and best-choice options like radar-based adaptive cruise control, a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system and computerized navigation and camera systems. Its high-tech appeal and $56,000 base MSRP could make the 2008 Lexus IS-F the non-German alternative you’re looking for in a luxury, fast set of wheels. |
