2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Overview
- Smaller version of the Range Rover
- Completely redesigned in 2014
- New high-performance SVR trim
If you’re in the market for something ultra-luxurious with off-road chops to match but a Range Rover is a little too much, then you’re in luck – the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport takes the Range Rover concept and shrinks it down slightly in a more accessible and affordable package.
Last year, the Range Rover Sport got nearly identical updates that the Range Rover received in 2013. The frame is now aluminum which shaved 800 pounds off of the Range Rover Sport, making it more athletic and more fuel efficient. The wheelbase is also seven inches longer now, which means more space in the cabin.
Under the hood there are two engines. The base engine, which debuted last year, is a 340-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 332 pounds-feet of torque. For those who want more power, a 510-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 which makes 461 pounds-feet of torque is also available. For 2015, the Range Rover Sport also welcomes a new trim, the high-performance SVR, which features a version of the supercharged V-8 that has been tuned-up to produce 550-hp and 502 pounds-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission option and four-wheel drive is standard. The SVR has a permanent four-wheel drive system with a two-speed transfer case. Thanks to the weight loss, fuel economy ratings improved in the redesign and top out at an estimate 17/23 mpg city/highway with the V-6 engine.
Inside, the added wheelbase length allows for the addition of an optional third-row of seats which expands seating capacity from five to seven. The standard features list has expanded for 2015 and now includes satellite and HD radio across all trim levels. Also standard are navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen, and powered front seats with memory on both sides.
Standard safety features include antilock brakes, eight airbags, an electronic stability system with rollover mitigation, and front/rear parking sensors, all standard. An available Vision Assist package adds a surround camera system which offers a top-down view of the Range Rover Sports surroundings, helpful for maneuvering in tight spaces.
