- Base engine adds more horsepower
- New exterior styling tweaks
- More interior features available, including ventilated front seats and an Infinity premium stereo
The 2014 Kia Sportage adds a few features for the new model year to keep it up to standard in what is a crowded compact crossover segment.
The Sportage has big ambitions, challenging more established names like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. For 2014, its base engine adds more horsepower, increasing output from 176 to 182. Styling tweaks include an updated grille, new wheel designs, HID headlights, and LED taillights which modernize the Sportage’s look. Also added are several interior technology options, including Uvo eServices, a 4.2-inch LCD screen, and an Infinity Premium Stereo.
Kia offers two engine options in the Sportage. The base engine is a 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline-four cylinder developing 168 pounds feet of torque and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. The top-of-the-line Sportage model, the SX, comes with a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter, inline-four cylinder engine mated to the six-speed automatic sending power to either the front or all four wheels.
The standard four-cylinder/front-wheel drive combination returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21/28 mpg city/highway, while all-wheel drive models with the 2.4-liter get 19/26 mpg city/highway. Turbocharged 2.0-liter the ratings come in at 20/26 mpg city/highway with FWD, and 19/24 mpg city/highway with AWD.
Among the Sportage’s notable standard features are an audio system with satellite radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, and a USB port, auto-down power windows, tilt steering wheel, and 60/40 split rear seat. Option highlights include Infinity premium audio with HD radio, dual automatic climate control, automatic headlights, and a cooled glove box. For 2014, the voice-activated Uvo eServices information and entertainment system has been upgraded. It integrates with your smartphone via Bluetooth to offer a long list of services, including emergency crash notifications, a parking minder that will remember where you left the Sportage, vehicle diagnostics and maintenance reminders, Pandora internet radio, and personalized Google maps points of interest.
Safety features found on all Sportage models include electronic stability and traction control, antilock brakes with emergency braking assist and electronic brake-force distribution, hill-start assist, and downhill brake control. The 2014 Sportage features six airbags: dual-stage front, front side-impact, and side-curtains.
