After a significant exterior refresh last year, the 2008 Kia Spectra compact sedan returns to woo customers with its great blend of fuel economy, interior amenities, and slipstream styling. Although its basic platform is shared with the Hyundai Elantra, the Spectra holds its own as a uniquely styled offering.

Available in three trim lines – basic LX, loaded SX, and top-level SX – the Spectra is powered exclusively by a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing that makes 138 horsepower for peppy acceleration. A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard and offers crisp shifting and decent feel. The optional 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is good for cruising at highway speeds.

Optional on SX models, the 4-wheel anti-lock braking system offers superior stopping power and reduces wheel lockup during hard braking. The Spectra is loaded with 6 standard airbags, including dual front airbags, dual front seat-mounted side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags protecting front and rear passengers in a collision. A standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerts the driver to any drops in tire pressure with a warning on the instrument panel.  

SX models add a sport-tuned suspension for crisper handling, unique front and rear fascias, 16” alloy wheels and tires, and a rear spoiler for more aggressive styling. Metal finish trim and medal foot pedals are also available on SX models for additional sportiness. An available AM/FM 6-disc CD changer with MP3 capability and an auxiliary input jack make listening to digital music an easy affair. Basic conveniences like air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, keyless remote entry, and cruise control come standard. A 6-way adjustable driver’s seat offers good comfort, while a 60/40 split folding rear seat offers enhanced cargo flexibility.
