2015 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid Sedan Overview
- Hybrid drivetrain produces 170 total horsepower
- 42/48 mpg city/highway
- Volkswagen’s first hybrid car offered in the United States
The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid adds a side dish of electric power to the popular Jetta compact, increasing fuel economy and decreasing carbon emissions.
The Jetta Hybrid gets some minor changes for 2015 including some exterior styling updates like a new grille and added safety technology. It is also now only available in the SEL Premium trim level. Styling is very similar to the standard Jetta, but subtle design tweaks that might not be easily seen with the naked eye reduce drag by 10 percent, which increases fuel economy. A small lip spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and bi-xenon headlights with daytime LED running lamps are all standard.
Though many associate the word “hybrid” with tame, the Jetta Hybrid actually offers a surprising amount of power. It is the most powerful car in the Jetta family, except for the high-performance GLI. A turbocharged 1.4-liter, four-cylinder gas engine combines with a 27-hp electric motor to output 170 total system horsepower and a robust 184 pounds-feet of torque. For those keeping track, that’s 55 more horses than the Jetta’s base engine, not to mention all that torque which helps the Jetta Hybrid feel quick and powerful. It also features a unique seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With some coaxing, the Jetta Hybrid can run up to 44 mph on electric power alone. The Jetta Hybrid offers estimated fuel economy of 42/48 mpg city/highway, far outpacing the diesel variant of the Jetta and matching up well with competitors like the Civic Hybrid.
Inside, the interior is standard Jetta fare with the addition of a multifunction screen housed in the instrument panel that displays fuel economy and other bits of green-driving information to the driver. Since the Jetta Hybrid is only offered in SEL Premium guise, there’s a lot of standard kit. Dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, and navigation all come standard.
The 2015 Jetta Hybrid did very well in crash testing, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, six airbags, an electronic stability system, rearview camera, and blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alerts.
