2012 Jeep Patriot Overview

The 2012 Jeep Patriot is Jeep’s most affordable SUV, and can be outfitted with a variety of rugged and refined options for an enjoyable driving experience on or off the road.

The Jeep Patriot is available as a front- or four-wheel drive, with two available engine types that run on regular gasoline. The 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder engine puts out 141 pounds/feet of torque, and comes standard on the front-wheel Sport and Latitude models with a manual five-speed transmission. The front-wheel drive Limited and all four-wheel drive models are powered by a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter, inline four-cylinder engine with 165 pounds/feet of torque and standard five-speed transmission. A continuously variable transmission with AutoStick manual control is available with both engines, and an additional CVT engine with a low range for off-road driving is available for the 2.4-liter engine. When outfitted with a tow package, the 2.4-liter engine also provides a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

The front-wheel drive Patriot receives a fuel economy rating of 21 to 23 mpg in the city and 27 to 29 mpg on the highway. The four-wheel drive rates at 20 to 22 mpg in the city and 23 to 28 mpg on the highway.

The Jeep Patriot interior seats five in two front bucket seats and a rear 40/60 split-folding seats. Cloth upholstery is a standard offering, and leather-trimmed seating is available. The driver and front passenger seats have optional heating, and a power six-way driver’s seat is available, as is a flat-folding front passenger seat for a maximum storage capacity of 62.7 cubic feet. With all seats folded up, the rear cargo storage has 23 cubic feet of storage, and includes a removable carpeted floor. Cargo tie-downs and bag hooks are standard on all models, and the Latitude and Limited have an available 115-volt power outlet for laptop or small appliance charging. A standard cargo lamp doubles as removable, rechargeable LED flashlight. The standard audio system includes four speakers and CD player with audio jack, premium audio and technology upgrades include UConnect voice commands with Bluetooth, navigation system with touch-screen, DVD playback, HD Radio and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls. A Sun and Sound package includes a power sunroof, satellite radio and premium audio system with two articulating speakers in the liftgate. An outside temperature gauge is standard, and air conditioning and power windows, locks, mirrors and remote start are available.

The Jeep Patriot shares a platform with the Compass, but takes on a squared appearance in the roof and front end. The Patriot embodies Jeep styling in the body-color seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel wells, round halogen headlamps and standard fog lamps. The Sport includes 16-inch styled steel wheels and can be upgraded to 17-inch aluminum wheels, which come standard on the Latitude and Limited. Black or bright side roof rails and adjustable roof cross rail bars are available, and can be outfitted with a number of cargo and carrier options. The Freedom Drive II four-wheel drive package supplies underbody protection with skid plates, and maximizes off-road performance with 4WD lock mode and optimized braking, traction control and transmission calibration.

Standard safety features include front airbags and supplemental side-curtain front and rear airbags. Front seat-mounted side airbags are available. The Patriot utilizes a safety cage structure with front and rear crumple zones, door guards and steel crossbeams for maximum passenger safety in a collision or rollover. The electronic stability system includes electronic roll mitigation, and traction control and antilock brakes provide additional safety and stopping performance.

Though the Patriot is not the most powerful off-road vehicle in the Jeep line-up, its affordable price and slate of options make it a great light-duty companion for the daily commute and weekend adventures.
