How the 2010 Jeep Liberty stacks up against the competition - by Nigel Cooper, Topanga, CA

Jeep Liberty Review
2010 Jeep Liberty
Price Range: $23,015 - $28,735

Performance
As far as horsepower, the average SUV packs quite a punch and will knock the Liberty down a few rungs. On the flip side, bear in mind that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With its tighter turning circle, the Jeep Liberty is most certainly nimbler than the average SUV, something to consider if you do a lot of city driving; on the other hand, bear in mind that a vehicle with a tight turning circle may feel a bit twitchy on the highway.

Drivetrain
The Jeep Liberty's engine is somewhat smaller than the average SUV's, but not terribly so. The Jeep Liberty could learn a lesson or two from the average SUV with respect to pickup. Torque is roughly equivalent to acceleration, and in this respect, the average SUV is significantly more powerful than the Liberty.

Utility
The average SUV will quite certainly prove more convenient than the Jeep Liberty for those of you with frequent child-cargo. The average SUV is likely a better choice than the Liberty regarding transporting cargo, especially if you frequently need to carry a lot of luggage or sizeable pets. Towing is significantly more the average SUV's forte than it is the Jeep Liberty's.

Convenience
The Jeep Liberty's fuel tank will need to be replenished more often than the unit in the typical SUV.

Comfort
While the front cabin in the Jeep Liberty offers a bit more head room than the typical SUV, there really isn't much of a difference. The Jeep Liberty provides more head- and leg-room to your passengers than the average SUV does.

Dimensions
The typical SUV is significantly heavier than the Jeep Liberty. The Jeep Liberty's tank is about the same size as the typical SUV's, though the typical SUV's is a bit bigger. The Jeep Liberty and the average SUV compete for the same parking spaces.

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs approximately the same to get the Liberty to the dealership as the typical SUV. As far as gas mileage, the average SUV is somewhat better than the Jeep Liberty, but not by much. Producing an exact fuel economy evaluation is so hard that some think not even the federal government can do it, but it looks as though both the Jeep Liberty and the Jeep Liberty perform almost similarly regarding gas mileage. The average SUV is considerably pricier than the Jeep Liberty regarding MSRP.

Warranty
The basic warranty that comes with the Jeep Liberty isn't quite as generous as the average SUV's.
