2014 INFINITI Q50 Hybrid Overview

  • New model for 2014
  • Hybrid version of the Q50, which replaces the G37 sedan
  • Total output of 354-hp
2014 is a year of big change at Infiniti. They have changed the names of all of their models; now Q refers to their line of passenger cars, while SUVs are designated by QX. There is also a brand new model in the fold as well, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid.

The hybrid tag at the end of the model name is a bit misleading. This isn’t a super-efficient vehicle by any means and the addition of the hybrid system boosts both fuel economy and performance equally. The Q50 Hybrid gets the same styling updates as the Q50, which got totally reworked sheet metal that is longer and lower than the old model. The sleek, curvy design gives the Q50 Hybrid an overall coefficient of drag of 0.26. For perspective, the notoriously slippery Toyota Prius is 0.25 meaning the Q50 is in impressive company.

Under the hood, the Q50 Hybrid combines a 3.5-liter V-6 and an electric motor to offer a combined output of 354-hp, which beats the 328-hp found in the gas-only Q50. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but if you want extra traction all-wheel drive is available. Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering system comes standard, which offers a precise steering feel via a computer controlled electronic system that can smooth out inputs from road imperfections and even wind. Owners can also calibrate their own settings for a customized driving experience.

Inside, the redesigned center console now features two touchscreens, an innovative touch with good integration. The two screens can work independently or together; for example with the optional navigation system, the top screen can display a map while the bottom is used to input the destination, or search points of interest. The Hybrid offers more standard equipment including leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, powered/heated front seats, a Bose sound system, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Q50 Hybrid does lose a little trunk space due to the batteries, but it’s still got plenty of room with 14.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability system, and a rearview camera. The Q50 Hybrid also offers many of the latest safety technology, with forward collision warning, blind spot warning, backup collision intervention, lane departure prevention, Active Lane Control, and an around-view camera system all optional.
