2009 Hyundai Elantra Overview
An affordable compact sedan with a surprising amount of standard features, the 2009 Hyundai Elantra offers modern styling and abundant interior space.

Available in two trim levels – the loaded GLS and the upscale SE – the Elantra is powered by a 2.0-liter, 138-horsepower 4-cylinder engine that offers sprightly acceleration and competitive fuel economy. The standard five-speed manual transmission offers tight, linear shifts, while the four-speed automatic transmission is a better choice for buyers with long commutes or major highway driving. The 4-wheel independent suspension imbues the Elantra will confident, adaptable handling in a variety of conditions. The Elantra gets has great fuel economy with 24-25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.  The Elantra competes with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Chevy Cobalt.

One major edition for 2009 is the sport-tuned Elantra Touring hatchback, which is set to compete with the Dodge Caliber, Toyota Matrix and Mazda3 hatchback.  All models receive revised gauges, while the SE gets standard auxiliary ports to integrate portable MP3 players. 

Featuring the most interior room in its class, the Elantra is also filled with an abundance of standard features. The 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback creates additional cargo space and room for larger items. Power windows, locks, and heated mirrors are convenient touches that make life easier. Remote keyless entry includes alarm, panic button, and trunk opener. SE models add a tilt and telescoping wheel to create the perfect driving position and integrated fog lamps for enhanced nighttime visibility.

Standard Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control and Brake Assist on SE models, enhancing directional stability and braking power while minimizing wheelspin. Standard dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and side curtain airbags protect front and rear seat passengers. 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake-force distribution help to maintain control in slippery conditions and prevent wheel lockup. Adjustable head restraints are standard on all seats, helping to prevent whiplash in the event of a collision. A standard tire pressure monitor system alerts the driver to any significant drops in pressure.
