Honda CR-V vs. Mitsubishi Outlander Review

Utility
Both the 2010 Honda CR-V and the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander offer two- and all-wheel (or four-wheel) drive versions and come in multiple trim levels. They come out even on cargo room with a maximum of 73 cubic feet. The Outlander offers slightly more legroom and more front headroom.

Performance
A 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine powers the 2010 Honda CR-V, while the Mitsubishi Outlander offers a 168-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a superior 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6. The Honda CR-V comes with a five-speed automatic, whereas the Outlander gets either a continuously variable transmission or a six-speed automatic.

Fuel Economy
With fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city and 27-28 mph highway, the CR-V edges out the Outlander's 18-21 mpg city and 24-27 mpg highway ratings. The Honda CR-V produces 7.7 to 8.0 metric tons of CO2 per year, which trounces the Outlander's 7.7 to 9.2 metric ton generation.

Technology
The Outlander features steering-wheel-mounted stereo controls and an optional nine-inch TV screen with DVD player; the CR-V lacks the DVD entertainment system. The Outlander and CR-V also make available a six-CD changer, sunroof, satellite radio, audio input jack, sunroof and a navigation system. The Outlander's Rockford Fosgate stereo pumps out up to 710 watts of sound, while the CR-V's audio options top out at 270 watts.

Safety
The base-model CR-V LX comes with brake assist, while the Outlander ES does not. Both have antilock brakes, front-side and head airbags and stability control systems. Five-Star side-impact ratings are achieved by the CR-V in government testing, and the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander gets Five-Star front-impact ratings.

Other

The Mitsubishi Outlander offers more power and more features for a lower price than the Honda CR-V, while the CR-V delivers better fuel economy. The top-end CR-V delivers more features, but at a steep hike in price. Your budget and preference of features will drive your choice, but the Outlander gives more bang for your buck.
