2013 Honda CR-Z Overview
Two years after its debut, the sporty 2013 Honda CR-Z gets a slight makeover that adds more performance and standard equipment to the mix.
Honda envisioned the CR-Z combining the usually exclusive characteristics of sportiness and fuel economy into a car that was fun to drive, but didn’t cost you an arm and a leg at the pump. Both of those properties have been enhanced in the 2013 CR-Z, which adds extra horsepower and torque, while also offering a slight bump in mpg as well.
These performance changes come thanks to some work done to the engine and a new lithium-ion battery pack that provides greater voltage to the electric motor. All told, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder and the electric motor combine to produce 130-horsepower (up eight over last year) and 140 pounds-feet of torque in models with the six-speed manual (127 pounds feet with the CVT). Speaking of the six-speed manual, the CR-Z is currently the only hybrid on the market to offer a manual transmission for a more engaged driving experience.
For 2013, Honda also added the Plus Sport System to the CR-Z, which places an “S+” button on the right side of the steering wheel. When the battery is charged to over 50%, pressing this button gives the CR-Z a boost of power from the battery for five seconds, great for passing on the highway or simply to have a good time on the road.
Fuel economy ratings check in at 36/39 mpg city/highway with the CVT and 31/38 mpg city/highway with the manual.
2013 also brings a few minor changes to the CR-Z’s exterior. The familiar wedge shape remains, but a new grille and front bumper with more pronounced air inlets and fog light recesses spruce up the front while a rear diffuser gives the car an even sportier look. LED daytime running lights are optional, as are 17-inch alloy wheels and heated side mirrors.
The 2013 CR-Z offers seating for two passengers inside a futuristic interior that is swathed in blue ambient light. Instead of a traditional center console, controls for the ventilation system are mounted on a pod to the right of steering wheel while a pod to the left contains the different drive settings. Standard features include automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a backup camera. A navigation system with SMS text message functionality and a leather wrapped steering wheel are optional.
The CR-Z also comes with plenty of standard safety features, such as active head restraints, six airbags, and an electronic stability system, and won a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.
