2013 GMC Terrain Overview

Closely related to the Chevrolet Equinox, the 2013 GMC Terrain is a compact crossover that seats up to five passengers and competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape.

For 2013, the Terrain sees a few exciting changes including a brand new 3.0-liter V-6 engine which replaces the outgoing V-6 and GMC’s Intellilink system which is offered as an option and integrates your smart phone with the Terrain. There is also a new upscale Denali model which adds unique wheels, some advanced safety features including blind spot warning and rear-cross traffic alert, and plenty of chrome trim pieces.

Although the Terrain and Equinox are mechanically identical (both are manufactured by GM), they have very philosophies when it comes to exterior style, you won’t be confusing the two by their looks. The 2013 Terrain has stuck to its rugged, boxy appearance while many of its contemporaries have gone for sleeker, more (dare we say) car-like styling. This makes the Terrain unique in a good way – it wears its creases well and the front chrome grill is bold and attractive. Fog lamps are standard while a power liftgate is optional.

Under the hood, there are two available engines: a 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder is the base engine while the brand-new 301-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 is optional. Four-cylinder equipped models get an Eco mode, which alters the drivetrains behavior to maximize fuel efficiency. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is front-wheel drive (all-wheel drive is optional).

Fuel economy ratings vary depending on your choice of engine/drivetrain. Four-cylinder, FWD models return 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, while V-6, FWD models get 20/29 mpg city/highway. Opting for all-wheel drive reduces these figures slightly.

Inside, the Terrain is well equipped in all trim levels. The second-row can also slide forward and back, offering leg room for rear passengers when needed or extra cargo room if you’re in need of rear storage space. Standard features include keyless entry, USB/iPod connectivity, air conditioning, steering wheel mounted audio controls, and power windows/locks. Also available are heated leather upholstery, a moonroof, and a navigation system.

Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability system.
