2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD Overview (See Available Styles)

The 2012 GMC Sierra 2500 heavy-duty pickup and its available Duramax turbo diesel engine is big enough to handle any task that comes its way.

There are only a few changes for 2012, including new heated and ventilated seats and a hard-drive-based navigation system. Trailer-sway control and hill-start assist are now part of the stability control system. The 2012 Sierra 2500HD is available in four trims: WT, SLE, SLT, and up-scale Denali. The GMC Sierra 2500HD shares the same platform and mechanics as the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, but is slightly more luxurious.

Choose between several cab configurations, including regular, extended, and crew-cabs, in addition to different bed lengths that vary from 5-feet, 9-inches to 8 feet. The standard engine for the 2012 Sierra 2500HD is a 360-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8 that produces 380 pounds-feet of torque and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. If you need more power, a 397-horsepower, 6.6-liter turbo diesel V-8 that generates a whopping 765 pounds-feet of torque for prime hauling and towing capability is also available. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic with manual shift control. Rear-wheel drive comes standard in all models, while four-wheel drive is optional. A floor-mounted transfer case is standard on the WT trims and a knob-controlled electric transfer case (Autotrac) that activates four-wheel drive when slippage is detected is optional.

A 36-gallon fuel tank is standard and allows the Duramax diesel engine to drive up to 680 miles on just one fill up. An available smart exhaust brake provides greater control on downward grades and reduced brake-pad wear. The Sierra 2500HD up has a payload capacity of up to 3,704 pounds, and you can tow up to 13,000 pounds with the standard ball hitch, and 17,800 pounds with an optional fifth-wheel.

In terms of the interior, the 2012 Sierra 2500HD features an available power-sliding rear window, rear-seat entertainment system, leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, backup camera, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, Bose audio system, power moonroof, and Wi-Fi system for mobile internet access.

Safety is impressive with four-wheel antilock brakes, rear parking sensors, front-seat side-impact airbags, curtain airbags, traction control, rollover mitigation technology, seat belt pretensioners, and OnStar, which automatically alerts authorities in the case of an accident.

If you need a truck that is capable of towing and hauling big-time payloads on a regular basis, but is also refined and has plenty of features, it will be hard to beat the 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD.
