The Volvo XC90 will most certainly prove handier than the GMC Envoy for those of you with frequent child-cargo.

As far as fuel economy, the XC90 and the GMC Envoy don't differ much.
When it comes to gas mileage, the Volvo XC90 is slightly better than the GMC Envoy, but not by much.
Regarding MSRP, the Envoy costs substantially less than the Volvo XC90.
Handling
With its tighter turning radius, the Envoy is definitely sprier than the Volvo, something to consider if you do a lot of city driving; on the other hand, keep in mind that a vehicle with a tight turning circle may feel a bit twitchy on the highway.
Drivetrain
The Volvo XC90's engine is substantially smaller than the GMC Envoy's. Note that smaller engines can be stressed more; on the flip side, smaller engines typically get better gas mileage.
Torque is roughly equivalent to acceleration, and in this respect, the GMC Envoy is considerably more powerful than the Volvo XC90.
Torque equals pickup, and the GMC Envoy will have picked up and gone by the time the Volvo XC90 finally gets moving.
Comfort
While the front cabin in the Envoy offers a bit more head room than the Volvo XC90, there honestly isn't much of a difference.
The GMC Envoy offers more head- and leg-room to your passengers than the Volvo XC90 does.

The basic warranty that comes with the GMC Envoy isn't quite as generous as the Volvo XC90's.
