2013 Infiniti FX50 SUV Overview
The five-seat Infiniti FX is a luxury crossover that emphasizes sportiness over utility. It is sold as the V-6-powered FX37, covered in a separate report, and as the V-8-powered FX50. It competes with a number of luxury crossovers, from the Lexus RX 350 to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and BMW X5. All-wheel drive is standard on the FX50.
The FX's beady headlights and rakish profile are at least as controversial as those elements on its predecessor, if not more so. Along the side, functional air vents reduce the FX's lift, Infiniti says. Exterior features include standard 20-inch alloy wheels (available 21-inch alloy wheels), bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, an optional adaptive suspension that continuously reacts to changing road conditions, and optional Rear Active Steer which angles rear wheels slightly to enhance turning precision.
The cabin has a high dashboard, and a ledge just below the windshield curls around to the windowsills. Air-conditioning and stereo controls sit below an available navigation display in the center control panel. The leather seats are available with quilted center inserts. Heated and ventilated power front seats are standard. Standard interior features include a reclining rear seat, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone climate control, power liftgate, and a USB input for MP3 players.
Under the Hood
The FX50's 5.0-liter V-8 makes 390 horsepower and teams with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The transmission has adaptive shift control, which adjusts shift points based on how the car is driven. Mechanical features include standard all-wheel drive and a 3,500-pound towing capacity.
Standard safety features include active front head restraints, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for both rows. Traction control, an electronic stability system and four-wheel-disc antilock brakes are also standard. The FX50's brakes have four-piston, aluminum front calipers, hardware that suggests serious stopping performance. Safety features include a standard Around View Monitor system uses four cameras to create a bird's-eye view of the immediate surroundings and includes new moving object detection capability. Optional are a lane departure prevention system, adaptive cruise control, and a forward warning system that applies brakes in the event of an impending collision.
