2013 Ford Mustang Overview

Few vehicles embody American iconography more than the Ford Mustang, and the 2013 model year is no exception. With new model updates including updated front-end styling and a more powerful V-8 engine in the GT, the 2013 Mustang continues its decades-old tradition as one of the great American muscle cars.

The Mustang is available in no less than eleven models, including the V-6, GT, Boss 302, and Shelby GT500 (covered separately on this site), with your choice of coupe or convertible in each variation save the Shelby.

The rear-wheel drive Mustang’s base engine is the 3.7-liter, V-6 with 305-horsepower. The 5.0-liter V-8 engine is capable of 420-horsepower, and the high performance V-8 of the Boss 302 puts out 444-horsepower. The V-6 and GT models offer a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, while the Boss and Shelby come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

The Mustang favors performance over fuel economy, so drivers should not expect long stretches between fill-ups. That being said, the V-6 is startlingly efficient for an engine with that much power and displacement, delivering the strongest fuel economy performance of the lot, with 19 mpg in the city and 29-31 mpg on the highway. The GT’s V-8 engine comes in at 15-18 mpg in the city and 25-26 mpg on the highway, while the Boss delivers a similar performance.

Sporty interior styling marks the Mustang, with soft-touch trim wrapping the instrument panel, and available aluminum-styled interior accents. Cloth seating, with front bucket seats and 50/50 split-fold rear seats in the coupe, are standard offerings while seat upgrades include RECARO cloth sport seats or front heated, leather-trimmed front seats in premium models. The standard entertainment system includes an auxiliary audio jack and Ford Sync, with hands-free Bluetooth calling and voice-activated music search and web app control, is optional. A premium Shaker audio system with HD radio is available, and includes upgraded speakers and an MP3-compatible CD-player. Navigation system and tech packages, with leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, are also available.

The 2013 Mustang features a race-inspired front air splitter and the classic Mustang logo on the grille. Standard high-intensity discharge headlights and LED accents in the headlights and taillights add visibility, and fog lamps are an available option. A glass roof with SPF 50-equivalent sun protection is available for the coupe models. Drivers can customize the look of their Mustang with a number of available packages, including a V6 Pony Package or Mustang Club of America Package for more classic styling. Boss models feature racetrack-inspired styling and high-performance options.

Safety features include dual front airbags, driver and passenger side impact airbags, electronic stability control, and a crash alert system. The Mustang is also equipped with a remote keyless entry system, tire pressure monitoring system, and an anti-theft system. The Ford MyKey system comes standard, allowing parents of young drivers to set speed and safety controls, and enables alerts to help teen drivers develop safe driving habits.

The 2013 Ford Mustang offers high performance driving, and the wide selection of models and styles, with a variety of customizable options, guarantees that any driver can find the Mustang that caters to the car lover within.
