2014 Ford Flex Overview

New/Notable:
  • Distinct, boxy styling
  • Seats six or seven passengers across three rows of seats
  • A pair of powerful V-6 engine options
Combining retro wagon style with the latest in car technology, the 2014 Ford Flex is a comfortable, stylish people carrier.

The distinct exterior style of the 2014 Flex features makes it a standout around town or on the road. The bold front end sports a chrome grille and the sides are defined with sculpted horizontal lines in the sheet metal drawing the eye down the side of the vehicle. It’s a retro design that seems to only be missing wood paneling of some kind. Exterior convenience options include a power liftgate for added convenience and a vista roof, which provides natural light and open air for all three rows.

Front wheel drive is standard, with an active all-wheel drive system also available. There are two V-6 engine options: the first is a 287-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, while a 365-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is optional. Both engines are offered with a six-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters are included with the EcoBoost V-6.

The front-wheel drive equipped Flex delivers 18/25 mpg city/highway, decent figures for a three-row crossover. Upgrading to all-wheel drive with the standard engine drops the fuel economy rating to 17/23 mpg city/highway. The more powerful turbocharged V-6 Flex, with all-wheel drive, gets 16/23 mpg.

One of the Flex’s defining interior characteristics is space. There is a roomy, comfortable ride to be found in any of the three rows, and Ford has stepped up with soft-touch materials replacing hard plastics throughout the cabin. Cloth seats with a six-way power driver’s seat come standard, while leather or perforated leather seating is optional. The second row seat includes a 60/40-split folding bench, which can be upgraded to reclining bucket seats that can be heated. The third row consists of a standard vinyl 50/50 fold-flat bench seat and can be upgraded to a powerfold bench with a tailgate feature, which converts the third row into rear facing seats for recreational seating at picnics or sporting events. The 2014 Flex is also well equipped with entertainment options, including a Sony sound system with 12-speakers, SiriusXM satellite radio, and DVD entertainment system. Ford’s SYNC system is included for hands-free audio and phone control, and a navigation system with SiriusXM traffic and travel link is available.

The Flex is equipped with standard and optional safety features that keep family driving in the forefront. Dual-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors protect passengers in all three rows. Optional inflatable second-row safety belts soften the impact of a frontal or side crash, and are compatible with child safety seats. Four-wheel disc brakes with antilock braking, electronic stability and traction control systems are included with all Flex models.
