2008 Ford Expedition Overview
Building on the introduction of the extended-length Expedition EL last year, the 2008 Ford Expedition full-size sport utility vehicle adds a new trim level – the King Ranch – to compete with its rivals in the full-size SUV market. With four well-equipped trim levels available – the XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited, and King Ranch – the rugged SUV can be upgraded at all levels to an Expedition EL. Measuring 14.7 inches longer and boasting 131 cubic feet of cargo volume – a 21 percent increase over the regular-wheelbase Expedition – the EL competes with the legendary Chevrolet Suburban. Power comes from the tried and tested 5.4 liter Triton® V8 engine with multi-valve technology generating 300 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, with 90 percent of available torque at or below 2000 rpm for maximum pulling power. The engine is mated to a class-exclusive 6-speed automatic transmission with wide gear ratios to accommodate the low-end torque. When equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, the Expedition can tow up to a maximum 9,200 lbs. On-road and off-road capabilities are solid. A first-in-class fully independent rear suspension (IRS) allows each wheel to respond independently to rough or uneven surfaces. The ControlTrac® 4x4 System, standard on the Expedition 4x4, provides added traction and off-road capability in high or low four-wheel drive mode, or 4x4 auto mode. A power rear liftgate and power running boards ensure easy cargo loading and passenger entry. You’d expect a full-size SUV to be loaded with safety features, and the Expedition comes equipped. AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (roll stability control) is a class-exclusive standard feature, monitoring driver input, road conditions, and slippage at all four wheels, providing added confidence in a variety of weather and road conditions. Front seat airbags, side-impact airbags, plus the Safety Canopy™ system with 2nd-generation side curtain airbags enhance protection for occupants in all three rows. An optional Reverse Sensing System uses an audible signal to alert the driver to any potential obstacles up to 6 feet from the rear when backing up. In addition, an optional new Rear View Camera gives a clear picture of what’s behind the vehicle from a liftgate-mounted camera that transmits the image to your rearview mirror. Amenities are abundant in the Expedition as well. An available rear-seat DVD entertainment system comes with an 8" LCD monitor, 2 sets of wireless headphones and a remote control - perfect for movies or video games. The first-in-class PowerFold 3rd-row seat folds flat for extra cargo room at the touch of a button, and it boasts the most 3rd-row legroom of any full-size SUV. |
