2012 Ford Expedition EL Overview
For the ultimate in spaciousness and off-roading capability, the 2012 Ford Expedition EL is the full-size SUV has it all.
Except for spotter mirrors that are integrated into the side mirrors to show blind spots, the Expedition EL (which stands for ‘extended length’) doesn’t see many changes for 2012. With four trims to choose from, the Expedition is sure to accommodate your price range. The trims include: XL EL, XLT EL, Limited EL and King Ranch EL. Competition to the Ford Expedition includes the Chevrolet Suburban. And for those who don’t need all of that room, a regular-size Expedition is available.
Luckily, all trims feature the same engine. A 310-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 generates 365 pounds-feet of torque for optimal acceleration and towing/hauling capability. The half-ton Expedition uses a six-speed automatic transmission and sends power through the rear wheels when not in four-wheel-drive. Maximum towing capacity is an impressive 9,200 pounds, and the optional load-leveling air suspension provides as smooth a ride as possible for this truck-based SUV. Fuel economy estimates aren’t kind at 13/14 mpg in the city and 18/20 mpg on the highway.
The 2012 Ford Expedition EL is a beast and comes with many standard features including fog lamps, heated mirrors, 17-inch wheels, an exterior keypad system, capless fueling system, automatic headlights, a roof rack and running boards. Power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, power running boards, power lifgate, 18- or 20-inch wheels and Sport Appearance package with black running boards and a body-colored grille are optional.
Inside, the Expedition EL can seat up to eight occupants in three rows, and is 15 inches longer than the regular Expedition. The 40/20/40-split second-row bench has reclining seatbacks and a sliding center that puts children in car seats within arm’s reach. You can either tug on the rear seats to fold them, or do it with a push of a button, which is mighty convenient considering that you have to fully remove the third row completely from other full-size SUVs. There is 130.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row; 85.5 behind the second row and 42.6 behind the third row. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, six-way power driver’s seat, six-speaker sound system and auxiliary input jack are standard, while Ford’s Sync multimedia system, heated and cooled front seats, a navigation system and DVD entertainment system are optional.
Front-seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, an electronic stability system with anti-rollover technology, trailer-sway control and MyKey, which lets parents set restrictions on teen drivers such as top speeds, stereo volume and a persistent seat-belt reminder.
