2013 Honda Fit Coupe/Hatchback Overview
With one of the more apt names in the car world, the 2013 Honda Fit proves that sometimes when downsizing, less really is more.
There are no real changes for the 2013 Fit but that might be a good thing – the 2012 version was the winner of Cars.com’s subcompact shootout last February, over cars like the Hyundai Accent, Ford Fiesta, and Nissan Versa.
Styling on the Fit is unique, it vaguely reminds one of a minivan that’s had a shrink ray taken to it, only with regular doors instead of sliding ones. 15-inch steel wheels are standard, while 16-inch alloys are available. Upgrading to the Sport model of the Fit adds a body kit, rear roof spoiler, and fog lights which lend a more aggressive slant to the visual proceedings.
The 2013 Fit offers only one engine option: a 117-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder that is mated to a standard five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic transmission. While the horsepower figure might seem small, it’s more than enough to push the slender Fit around town and on the highway, when we drove it earlier this year it proved more than adequate for merging. Fuel economy figures are actually better with the automatic than the manual: 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, compared to 27 city mpg and 33 highway mpg. However Fit Sport models get the latter figures with both transmission options.
The Fit is a four-door hatchback and opting for that shape helps it to, well, fit more stuff inside. Despite its short wheelbase and small exterior dimensions, the Fit has 90.8 cubic feet of cargo volume and 20.6 feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats, a figure which bests even midsize sedans by a fair margin. The rear seat splits 60/40 and folds, and the bottom seat cushions can be raised for greater vertical storage as well.
For a car that starts under $16,000, the Fit also has a surprisingly long list of standard features, including air conditioning, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, auxiliary audio input, and a USB/iPod port. A navigation system and leather-wrapped steering wheel are optional.
Furthering the Fit’s case is its Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Antilock brakes, six airbags, active front head restraints, and an electronic stability system with traction control all come standard.
One of the best values on the road, the 2013 Honda Fit is to put it simply, built to fit neatly into your life with good fuel economy, versatile cargo and passenger carrying capability, and a very competitive base price.
