2015 Turbo - A Plucky Daily Driver

Reviewed by Haruko
August 17, 2015

My 2015 Turbo is my second Fiat; I swapped out of a 2013 Pop to trade up for 1.) more power and 2.) nicer seats. This is, all-around, a much nicer car to drive than the Pop if you're more accustomed to bigger displacement. While there is some definite turbo lag, when it punches, it punches pretty hard for a small car. From the factory, it's not as quick, as firm, or as loud as the Abarth. If you like the Abarth sound, the good news is you can put the Abarth straight pipes on your Turbo and it sounds the same. And it makes it a lot of fun. I don't really miss the speed, but having had this car for half a year, I do think it needs a firmer suspension for quick canyon carving. On the other hand, it's very pleasant for city driving and long distance freeway driving as well. Compared to the base 500, it drives like a larger car at speed and feels more stable. The new digital dash is nice and has tons of usable information easily accessible. There's a turbo boost gauge, which 14 and older Turbos didn't have. Kinda pointless, but fun. The interior is a big upgrade over the base car, after having lived with the base car for two years. The things you touch are leather, and while it's cheap leather, it's still nicer than other cheapy cars. Outside, you get bigger wheels (16", with an optional 16" wheel package for appearance), better tires (Pirelli P7), Abarth brakes which are much better than the base, and you get the sinister black-bezel lights as well. No matter what color Turbo you chose, the black lights make it look about as mean as a small car can. Economy suffers a bit if you drive aggressively in the city or driver at very high speeds on the freeway. When doing either, I've found my fuel economy to fall dramatically - I averaged 23mpg after a particularly high-speed stretch of driving. The good news is, if you drive sensibly for the most part, it's possible to average as much as 41mpg. An average of ~32mpg is about what I experience in a tank of gas and that's not too bad when you consider the fun factor, the ridiculous noise, and the snappy 5-speed stick. There are more efficient cars, and cars that get similar averages despite being bigger, but you trade fun or more money for them. As a fairly cheap daily driver goes, this thing is great. It's fun when you want fun, it's relatively pleasant when you want relaxing. It's genuinely comfortable, period. You can park anywhere, you can get out of your own way when you floor it, you can dart around in traffic easily. If you can get over the idea that you -need- a bigger car and try this thing, you'll love it. I had a much larger sports car as a daily driver for about a decade, and while it has taken me about two years to really adapt to the Fiat, I really can say I wouldn't want anything bigger as a commuter car again. Try it, buy it, give it some time, and you won't want to go back to a big car. Another consideration: while the 135hp of the Turbo may not seem like much compared to some bigger cars at sea level, turbos don't suffer the big power losses that non-turbo cars do at high altitude. I live at 7500 ft, and this thing is so much faster than non-turbo cars of bigger displacement up here.

I bought my Fiat 500 Pop late June and I have been enjoying every single ride. I would recommend this car for performance, style, design, comfort, sturdiness and fun. It is also very good in gas, which is a plus. Just love it.
