2014 Dodge Durango Overview

The Dodge Durango gets its first significant update since its redesign in 2011 and returns for 2014 sporting new exterior styling, a new eight-speed transmission, and plenty of interior upgrades.
So much has changed on the Durango that it feels more like a redesign than a refresh. We’ll start with changes to the exterior, which features plenty of noticeable tweaks especially in the rear. Up front, Dodge’s signature crosshair grille has been thinned to better match updated headlight clusters which now feature LED daytime running lamps. The grille material/appearance changes depending on trim level. Larger changes take place out back, where the Durango adopts the same LED “racetrack” taillights found on the Charger/Dart. The Durango’s taillights also feature white reflectors which diffuse the light and give the racetrack a seamless appearance and hides the individual LEDs, all 192 of them.
Big changes also come under the hood, where a new eight-speed automatic transmission with standard paddle shifters replaces the outgoing five-speed automatic. The new transmission with its three extra gears offers fuel economy benefits and a smoother highway cruising experience. Both engine options carryover: a 290-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 and a 360-hp, 5.7-liter V-8. Also new is an “Eco” mode which does not alter throttle response, only shift points which makes it less intrusive than other similar systems out there. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with four-wheel drive optional. The best fuel economy figures come with the V-6 and rear-wheel drive: 18/25 mpg city/highway.
The 2014 Durango seats six or seven passengers, depending on your choice of a second row bench or captain’s chairs. Large improvements have been made over the last several years across the entire Chrysler lineup when it comes to materials and fit-and-finish, and the Durango reflects that improvement – it is a very comfortable cabin with soft touch points. For 2014, the Durango makes great strides when it comes to in-car technology, adding an optional 8.4-inch touch screen that houses the Uconnect multimedia system (a 5-inch screen is standard on lower trims). Also new is a 7-inch LCD screen in the instrument panel, which offers customizable speedometers and other displays. An optional Blu-Ray rear entertainment system rounds out the new technology features, offering two 9-inch screens mounted on the front seats that can display media from different sources.
Standard safety features include seven airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. A forward-collision mitigation system is a new option, joining blind spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and Uconnect Access which offers 911 calling and roadside assistance.
