2014 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan Overview
- 45 combined mpg
- Got the same changes as the Civic sedan in 2013
- More standard features than normal Civic sedans
Honda takes one of the most popular cars on the road and adds hybrid fuel efficiency with the 2014 Civic Hybrid.
The Civic Hybrid mostly stands pat for 2014 after getting extensive changes last year. Unlike the gas version of the Civic, the Civic Hybrid is only offered as a sedan so it’s four doors or bust for the electric-augmented compact car. Styling changes in 2013 made the Civic Hybrid more aggressive, with a larger grille and lowered bumpers, and bold chrome accents along the bottom of the front fascia and around the rear as well. Hybrid models get a few styling touches of their own, including unique, 15-inch lightweight wheels, blue tinting in the headlights, and hybrid badges.
Under the hood, the 2014 Civic Hybrid features a hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and an electric motor for a total output of 110-hp and 127 pounds-feet of torque. The Civic Hybrid gets an EPA estimated 44/47 mpg city/highway which is good 45 mpg in combined driving. This beats the Civic sedan by 12 mpg combined, a 36-percent increase in fuel economy. The Civic Hybrid also gets a hill start assist system standard which is not found on lower trim levels of the gasoline Civic.
This trend continues when you get to the Civic Hybrid’s interior, where it has an expanded standard features list compared to gasoline models. Satellite radio, automatic climate control, push button start, and an upgraded stereo with a seven-inch display are all standard Civic Hybrid additions. They join a backup camera, Bluetooth connectivity with text messaging functionality, cruise control, and power windows/locks as standard. The Civic Hybrid is only offered in two trim levels, the second one being “Civic Hybrid with Leather” which predictably adds leather upholstery, as well as heated front seats. A navigation system is optional and also adds HD radio.
The 2014 Civic Hybrid, like the gas version, excelled in crash testing earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick award for 2014 from the IIHS, even with their more stringent standards for the new model year. The Civic Hybrid also adopts Honda’s unique “Lane Watch” system that debuted in the Accord last year. When the right turn signal is activated, the screen in the car’s dashboard displays a picture of the blind spot over the driver’s right shoulder for safer lane changes and merges. A backup camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, ABS, six airbags, and ACE body structure are also standard.
