2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid Overview
Considering that it can pull a 6,100-pound trailer and still get 23 mpg on the highway, the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid pickup is a fantastic freak of nature.
The Silverado 1500 Hybrid gets an updated front end for 2012 that includes a chrome mesh grille and chrome bumper, as well as a host of new available colors. A 322-horspower, 6.0-liter V-8 gas engine pairs with two electric motors, which are powered by a 300-volt battery pack. All told, the Silverado 1500 Hybrid produces a whopping 367 pounds-feet of torque. A power flow display lets you know how efficiently you’re driving and the Silverado 1500 Hybrid can operate on battery power alone at speeds up to 30 mph.
As for those fuel economy estimates: the 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 Hybrid receives 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. According to GM, those estimates are 18 percent better city fuel economy than a Ford F-150 and 43 percent better than a RAM 1500. Consider that the non-hybrid Silverado 1500 receives 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway and produces a paltry 195 horsepower, the hybrid version's 127-horsepower advantage with better fuel economy is even more impressive.
The 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid features a Crew Cab and a short bed, and comes in two trims (1HY and 2HY), with two- or four-wheel drive. As for towing, the 1500 Hybrid can tow up to 6,100 pounds (on electricity alone at speeds up to 25 mph) while payload capacity is 1,553 pounds.
Exterior features include 18-inch wheels, low-rolling resistance tires, heated mirrors, and a deeper front air dam than the gas-only Silverado. Fog lights and integrated turn signals in the mirrors and a power sunroof are optional. The Silverado 1500 Hybrid seats up to six people and Bluetooth® connectivity and an auxiliary power outlet are just some of the standard features. Power, leather-appointed bucket seats, a premium sound system, navigation system, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and a USB port are optional.
