2009 Chevrolet HHR Overview
Using a retro look, immense cargo room and surprising efficient fuel economy, the 2009 Chevrolet HHR gives drivers a combination of style and substance.
Available in four trims—LS, LT1, LT2 and SS, the HHR offers several different options. Whoever said that American cars don’t lend themselves to fuel efficiency aren’t referring to the HHR. For its size, the HHR offers better fuel economy than others in its class with 22 MPG city and 32 MPG highway. That’s better than the PT Cruiser, Dodge Caliber, Scion xB and Kia Rondo.
The LS and LT1 have a 2.2-liter, 155-horsepower engine. The LT2 has a 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower engine with 22/30 MPG and the SS has a 2.0-liter, 260-horsepower beast under the hood getting 21/29 MPG. 5-speed manual transmissions come standard in all trims with optional 4-speed transmissions. That’s more power than all previously mentioned competitors except the Dodge Caliber. The HHR proves its versatility by running on either gasoline or E85 ethanol, emitting up to 23 percent fewer emissions.
Inside, cargo room is abundant, with a maximum volume of 57.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. That cargo space is great for commercial use as well as personal use. The HHR Panel ditches both rows of rear seats and the rear side windows are covered with body-colored steel inserts for those looking to maximize the interior space.
Amenities are also plentiful and include an optional enhanced sound package with a 260-watt Pioneer premium seven-speaker sound system with in-dash six-disc CD changer with MP3 playback, XM® Satellite Radio and power-sliding sunroof. General Motor’s OnStar® service comes standard and provides turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle diagnostics, automatic crash response and hands-free calling.
Safety features include standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and an optional electronic traction control system that minimizes wheel spin during takeoffs. StabiliTrak electronic stability control is standard on all models, which enhances driver control and maneuverability in emergency situations. Dual-stage front airbags, front and rear outboard head-curtain and side impact airbags are standard.
If you like to ride high, spend less at the pump, fit everyone and everything inside and look good doing it, the 2009 Chevrolet HHR is both a smart and fun choice.
