2012 Chevrolet Equinox Overview
The 2012 Chevrolet crossover SUV Equinox is available in front- or all-wheel drive and comes in three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. The Equinox offers competitive pricing and excellent fuel economy, two features that should make it very popular amongst new car shoppers.
The standard 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine can be upgraded to a 264-horsepower, 3.0-liter, V-6 gas/E85 ethanol engine; all engines are mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. Choose between front- or all-wheel drive is available. The four-cylinder engine produces 172 pounds-feet of torque and has a towing capacity of 1500 pounds, while the larger V-6 engine produces 222 pounds-feet of torque and can tow up to 3500 pounds, when equipped with the dealer-installed trailer equipment package.
The front-wheel drive Equinox receives a fuel economy rating of 15-22 mpg in the city and 22-32 mpg on the highway (lower numbers with the V-6), and the all-wheel drive model is rated at 12-20 mpg in the city and 17-29 mpg on the highway.
Inside, Equinox’s design offers its five passengers a comfortable and stylish ride, especially in the higher trim levels. The base cloth upholstery and power height and lumbar adjustable driver seat can be upgraded to perforated leather upholstery, an eight-way power adjustable driver seat, and heated driver and front passenger seats. Rear 60/40-split folding seats slide forward to increase cargo space or back to increase passenger legroom. Manual air conditioning is included, while automatic climate control is available. A stereo with satellite radio and auxiliary input jack come standard, and can be upgraded to include a seven-inch color touch-screen, or Chevrolet MyLink system with smartphone integration. A Pioneer sound system, Gracenote music database, and navigation system are also available.
The Equinox has a pleasing exterior design, with an angular front hood and horizontally split front grille. The rear glass window features a seamless, wrap-around feel, with a roof-mounted spoiler. Side and center roof rails are available, and the rear manual lift gate has a power-programmable option. Halogen headlamps come standard and front halogen fog lamps are available. Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels come standard, and upgrade options include 18- and 19-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.
Standard safety features include dual-stage front airbags, thorax side-impact and seat mounted airbags, and side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability and traction control are included, as is electronic trailer sway control with rollover mitigation. OnStar emergency response is standard in all models, and includes a six-month subscription. A rear camera is standard on LT and LTZ models, and the LTZ has an optional collision alert and lane departure warning system.
