2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Exterior

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Overview

Soldiering on, the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche enters its final year of production with a few new tricks up its sleeve.

The Avalanche was Chevy’s proof that the midgate design, which unites the best aspects of an SUV and pickup truck, could work. It is very flexible, thanks to its midgate which separates the cabin from the truck bed, which can be opened to stretch the bed length from 5- to 8-feet.

From the outside, this dichotomy is available for all to see – the Avalanche looks like an SUV until you get to the C-pillar, and from there back it’s all pickup with a unique set of struts that blend the cabin with the truck bed. It has been noted that Avalanche’s unique design does have one clear drawback and that’s in rear visibility. But Chevy has addressed that shortcoming, with the addition of a standard backup camera and rear parking sensors for 2013.

Under the hood, the 2013 Avalanche features a 320-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8 that pumps out 335 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is flex-fuel capable, accepting both gasoline and E85 ethanol. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional for extra traction. For 2013, the Avalanche also adds powertrain grade braking to the normal transmission mode, which uses the engine to slow the Avalanche during descents which saves the brakes. Fuel economy ratings are very truck-like: 15/21 mpg city/highway.

Inside, the Avalanche seats up to six passengers on its two bench seats. For 2013, new standard features include power-adjustable pedals and a remote vehicle start system. Cloth upholstery, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a USB port are also standard. The Avalanche is also available with a, well, an avalanche of technology options including a touch-screen navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, heated and cooled seats, and Chevy Mobile Hotspot which turns the Avalanche into a Wi-Fi hotspot so you’ll always be connected.

Standard safety features include six airbags, all-disc antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system.

Get the best of both the SUV and pickup truck worlds with the versatile 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche.
