2012 BMW X5 Overview (See Available Styles)

The BMW X5 all-wheel-drive crossover SUV is available in five trim levels and three engines, including a diesel inline six-cylinder. Seating options range from five passengers in two rows or seven passengers in three rows. The X5 xDrive35i also includes Premium and Sport Activity trim levels, and the xDrive50i and diesel-powered xDrive35d round out the available models.

The xDrive35i comes with a 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive50i has a 400-horsepower, 4.4-liter, V-8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. The xDrive35d is powered by a 265-horsepower, 3.0-liter, twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, and includes a six-speed automatic transmission. All automatic transmissions feature adaptive transmission control for smooth shifting, and include sport and steptronic manual shift modes. Brake energy regeneration captures energy otherwise lost during braking and coasting in the gas-powered engines.

Fuel economy for the xDrive35i trim levels is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg for highway driving, and the xDrive50i weighs in at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The diesel xDrive35d increases fuel economy with a rating of 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The X5 seats five, with driver and front passenger bucket seats, a rear bench seat, and an optional third row seat to expand capacity to seven passengers. Ten-way power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats come standard, and leather upholstery, four-way lumbar support, and driver memory settings are also standard features in most trim levels. The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel provides controls for the audio system, cruise control, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. The standard AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system includes ten-speaker sound, HD radio, and an iPod/USB adapter, and can be upgraded with the addition of satellite radio. The BMW iDrive system with on-board computer offers a knob controller and six programmable memory buttons. The available navigation system provides maps and real-time traffic reporting. Luxury and convenience upgrades include heated rear passenger seats, four-zone climate control, keyless entry and universal garage-door opener.

Depending on trim level, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels come standard, and the Sport Activity model included 20-inch alloy wheels. Exterior features include adaptive headlights, fog lights with LED headlight rings, moonroof and optional panoramic moonroof, and power liftgate.

Driver and passenger safety is ensured with a front and rear head protection system and active head restraints, front-side impact airbags, side curtain airbags, and rollover crash protection sensors. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with brake assist, electronic stability and traction control provide an extra layer of on-road vehicle safety. The standard BMW Assist safety plan provides collision notification, emergency response and roadside assistance, and includes a free four-year service plan. Heads up display and side-view cameras are available, as is a rear view camera to extend visibility for the driver.

The BMW X5 offers performance, luxury, comfort and safety in this crossover SUV. Most trim levels are packed with standard luxury features, and the selection of packages, options and engine types ensure a wide range of SUV choices.
