2009 BMW X3 Overview
If you're looking for the prestige of a BMW and the spaciousness of an SUV, the 2009 BMW X3 combines power, refinement, sedan-like handling and adequate cargo room - and makes driving fun again.
Available solely as the X3 3.0si, it features a 3.0-liter, 260-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission offering three driving modes and the hands-on control of a manual. Basically, the X3 is the 3-Series version of an SUV. The standard xDrive all-wheel drive system provides tenacious grip and maximum traction in all weather conditions. The X3 gets 16-17 mpg in the city and 23-24 mpg on the highway and competes with the Cadillac SRX, Lexus RX 350, Acura RDX and Land Rover LR2. Although the X3 is an SUV, it is geared for on-road performance rather than off-road ruggedness.
Interior features include a standard panoramic moonroof with fully automatic two-piece glass panels, power slide and lift control, wind deflector, and interior sunshade. Automatic climate control includes a micro-filter for a healthy in-cabin environment. A standard CD/MP3 audio system with eight speakers, auxiliary audio input adapter, 6-disc CD changer and satellite radio provides a sweet sound and accommodates portable music players. The optional Cold Weather package includes heated front and rear seats and a retractable headlight washer system. Get leather seating and other leather interior appointments with the Premium package; get 18-inch alloy wheels, running boards and a firmer suspension with the Sport package; and get active headrests in the new Sport Activity package.
Handling is supplanted by standard Dynamic Stability Control, which features innovative Brake Drying, Brake Stand-By, Start-Off Assist, and Brake Fade Compensation to enhance braking power, emergency maneuvering, and hill ascent. Standard Hill Descent Control automatically modulates the brakes and engine speed to assist with downhill traversing. Standard 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes with Dynamic Brake Control stop the X3 with authority and prevent wheel lockup under hard braking. Front and rear anti-roll bars further enhance all-road handling and lateral moves. Dual front airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, and front door-mounted side airbags offer protection for front and rear seat passengers in a collision.
Smaller than its big brother the X5, the 2009 BMW X3 nonetheless offers a wealth of amenities, classic BMW sophistication and a compact size that will surely be a big hit.
